On Oakland Tuesday night, I watched police in riot gear shoot tear gas and hurl flashbangs into a protest in Oakland that, by every account I've read, was peaceful aside from a very few isolated miscreants. Civil disobedience was met with disproportionate and potentially lethal force (lethal: as in, no, the tear gas itself won't kill you, but a canister bashing your head certainly can). It's Friday morning. My original plan had been to find one bad idea every week and write about it at length, but I came across so many good ones over the last few days that that I think I'm going to have to share several stories with you.
