Everybody’s Records is in trouble

Frankly, I was hoping to dust the blog off on a happier note than this one, but I want to get this in front of as many eyes as possible. I covered this over on Voices, but just in case there are any of you who (used to) read this blog and not that one, the abridged version is that Walgreens is trying to move approximately 150 yards onto the corner where Everybody’s and the Gaslight sit. If you know the area at all, or you’ve ever been to Everybody’s, you can imagine how the locals feel about Read more [...]

VIDEO: A Quick Reminder of Why SOPA Sucks

If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you’re probably sick of hearing about this by now, but it would be impossible for me to understate exactly how bad I believe this law will be for the internet as we know it. So once again I’ll implore you: Please, if you feel as I do and you haven’t done so already, please call your senator and representative and express your concerns about this bill.

People of Walmart, meet Elizabeth Halfmoon

This would normally wait for Bad Idea Friday, but it's just too good. Welcome to Tulsa, where Fox 23 reports that Ms. Halfmoon, apparently too broke to actually buy the necessary chemicals for cooking meth, decided that the next best course of action would be to actually mix those chemicals, or "cook" them, inside Wally World. I will award points for creativity and originality, but I have to take them right back for execution. Apparently she was in the store for six hours; I have no idea how long Read more [...]

Rick Perry is Still a Clown [Updated]

UPDATE: While originally reporting that Perry’s ad had originally surpassed Rebecca Black’s “Friday” as the most disliked video in YouTube history, the Huffington Post has now corrected (with some disappointment, if I’m not mistaken) that Perry is still safely behind the Biebs by nearly a factor of 10 for that coveted title; still, as you can see, to get to where he did with the number of views that he had is pretty remarkable. Who knew people would hate aimlessly lashing out at people Read more [...]

On Oakland and Occupy in General

On Oakland Tuesday night, I watched police in riot gear shoot tear gas and hurl flashbangs into a protest in Oakland that, by every account I've read, was peaceful aside from a very few isolated miscreants. Civil disobedience was met with disproportionate and potentially lethal force (lethal: as in, no, the tear gas itself won't kill you, but a canister bashing your head certainly can). (Caution: Both videos have language that is NSFW) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lbbWAgBy7E The gentleman Read more [...]

Climate Science Denial in WV (and an appeal)

Meet Bill Maloney and Earl Ray Tomblin. They would like to win the office of Governor in West Virgina. They're also not big fans of science. Via The Huffington Post: "We’re in a cooling cycle," said GOP businessman Bill Maloney when asked by West Virginia MetroNews' Hoppy Kercheval if he believed humans are responsible for causing the world to warm. Democrat Earl Ray Tomblin's answer wasn't much better, although it was at least factually accurate. "Once again, there are differences of opinion Read more [...]

Bad Idea: Dressing As Gumby

...at least if you're going to rob a store. This is the kind of news article that I would normally post with the question "Florida or Germany?" (it's an old Adam Corolla bit if you're unfamiliar). However, the lucky city in this instance is San Diego. According to the story on SanDiego.com (and the security footage that I've attached below), Gumby strolled into a 7-Eleven with his hands held up above his head, along with a genius accomplice who didn't bother to conceal his identity in any way. Bad Idea: Assorted Bad Ideas

It's Friday morning. My original plan had been to find one bad idea every week and write about it at length, but I came across so many good ones over the last few days that that I think I'm going to have to share several stories with you. (OK really I'm too beat to write anything meaningful, so I found a few funny things to share.) I can't embed this video, but this young lady from New Zealand was very close to being up for a Darwin Award. A son nominates his mother for Mom Of The Year.     (see Read more [...]

Bad Idea: Random Wake-up Calls

Note: Welcome to Bad Idea. This will be a regular Friday theme moving forward, because there aren't too many better ways to start a Friday than seeing someone else make a shitty decision. There are more business models out there than there are people. Some are bad, some are good, and some are just too awesome for words. BoingBoing has uncovered one that clearly falls into the third category. I mean, we've all had the thought go through our heads at one point, right? "Gosh, you know what would Read more [...]
