That’s a funny-looking jobs bill you got there…..

Artist: John ColeBefore anyone jumps all over the title of this post, I should point out that I'm well aware that this 'discussion' was brought about by the Obama administration's decision not to defend DOMA in court. I'll grant that the GOP is correctly painting this as reactive rather than proactive. Still, for a political party that claims to have won a singular mandate to fixing the economy, they are spending an awful lot of time and money "defending marriage".At any rate, I ran across this video Read more [...]

Quick thoughts on book burning

By now, I'm sure everyone has heard about the church in Florida burning a Quran, and the fallout from that burning in Afghanistan (I'm on the road, but I'll post links later in case you missed it somehow) My thoughts: Burning someone else's holy book is a meaningless, fruitless gesture. Sure, you have a right to do it in America, and I'll defend that right as best I can any day of the week, but really, what do you hope to accomplish by this other than drawing a load of (assumedly) negative attention Read more [...]

The Daily Show keeps me sane

The Daily ShowTags: Daily Show Full Episodes,Political Humor & Satire Blog,The Daily Show on FacebookThere's not much I can add to this. Seriously though, you paid more in taxes than GE did last year. Let that sink in for a minute. Sure, you weren't cutting as many paychecks to Americans either, and that's certainly worth something, but can we all agree that it is MINDNUMBINGLY RIDICULOUS THAT YOU CAN NET 14 BILLION DOLLARS AS A COMPANY AND PAY ZERO? Please, say we can. Read more [...]

Asshat Of The Week

Wheeeeeee!!!!!!!It's shark-jumping time again, although it's not like this is Newt's first trip up the ramp. Just in case there was anyone out there in blogland who thought Mr. Gingrich hadn't completely lost all of his marbles, I give you this article from Talking Points Memo. Here's the direct quote (this from Politico):"I have two grandchildren — Maggie is 11, Robert is 9," Gingrich said at Cornerstone Church here. "I am convinced that if we do not decisively win the struggle over the nature Read more [...]

An O’Reilly Blast From The Past

This video was emailed to me today. It's a Fox News instant classic, in that it records one of the few moments where someone on the network (besides Biff Beck) straight out suggests a vast leftist conspiracy. It was taped in 2007, and while O'Reilly lamenting that the left "wants to take down the White Christian Male power structure, and import millions of foreign nationals" is pretty funny (well, sort of), the real doozie here is right after that bit; McCain says "the time may come when we have Read more [...]

University of Maryland on the midterms, Fox News, and misinformation

I came across this gem from a NYT blog yesterday. The University of Maryland has performed a study and discovered that the American electorate in general is grossly misinformed about an embarrassingly large number of things. Also, comically (at least to me), they've actually found a way to express and quantify what I've always been pretty sure of: that viewers of Fox News are the most prone to such misinformation (although it's worth noting that consumers of NPR/PBS and MSNBC do not go unscathed Read more [...]

How stupid is Glenn Beck?

Wow. It takes a lot for Glenn Beck to surprise me anymore, but the Twitter/Facebook kerfuffle about this just caught my attention. Check this out. (Edit: see update at bottom)Yeah, it appears that Mr. Beck, or whoever it is on his staff that handles his Twitter account, favorited what basically amounts to a white supremacist tweet, leading to a white supremacist blog on a white supremacist website. In case its gone, there are images of it on stopbeck.com, and on Media Matters here.If you're Read more [...]

Cults?

I'm waiting for the dust to to settle on T.O.'s deal before I write about it, so in the meantime, I'll point you at this Politico post that talks about Tennessee's sitting Lt. Governor dropping absolute gems, such as:-referring to Islam as a "cult"-suggesting that Muslims are trying to bring Sharia law into the US (he doesn't specify how this master plan will occur)-later "clarifying" his comments by adding (after assuring his constituents that he has "no problem with peace-loving, freedom-loving Read more [...]

Food for thought

Anyone that knows me knows that there isn't much that I don't have a solid opinion on. I may not be quick to share it for whatever reason, but its there. This would be a rare occasion where I'm pretty torn. Read for yourself. I'm a rabid defender of free speech. I feel that it is one of our most important liberties. Without it, information and ideas are not exchanged, and we are poorer for it. This, however, I'm not so sure on. Legally, I'm sure the school has every right to censor whatever they Read more [...]

What a day.

Quite a bit has happened since this speech was given. I know that we saw history today, and while I'm still nervous about what lies ahead for us as a nation, I think we could all do well to remember the things Obama talks about in this piece. Many have said that this was just politicking, that it didn't really come from the heart. Perhaps it did, and perhaps it didn't. We'll never really know. I would argue, though, that whether it was heartfelt or not, its still worth bearing in mind as we forge Read more [...]

Part II, belated….

Sorry for the delay; real life interfered for a few days ;).At any rate, I was discussing the Creation "Museum" when I last posted. I always feel like I need to be crystal clear in talking about this, because every time this conversation gets started, someone winds up getting offended, getting their feelings hurt, or just plain mad at me. That's just fine, mind you, but that's the reason I'm choosing words so carefully on this topic. My problem is not, and has never been, with the Bible. It is a well Read more [...]
