30 Day Song Challenge – Week 3

If you’re just tuning in, my old friend Jene at The Original Bean has devised a blogring-esque version of the 30 Day Song Challenge that’s been all over Facebook. Jump in.

Week 3: Your Favorite Cover Song

I changed my choice on this yesterday. I was all set to scour YouTube for the best version I could find of the Dead Kennedys “I Fought the Law”. I love it for it’s unrestrained political statement (and also because it’s the Dead Kennedys). Then, on the way home from work, this cover popped up on my playlist, and I knew I had to switch.
I’d call myself a Dave Matthews fan, but not a fanatic. This cover, though, just burns. Sure, it’s political too, but I think the final product even overshadows that. It. Just. Burns.
It stays true to the original, which is a tall order considering the source (Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse). Obviously, Warren Hayes (of Gov’t Mule and Allman Bros (v2.0) fame) makes it what it is more than Dave and his band anyways, but it really is the perfect union for this cover. Trying to explain why I dig it so much any further than that could take away from it. It is super long, but if you’ve never heard it, do yourself a favor: Carve out ten minutes, turn out the lights, lay flat on the floor, crank the volume all the way up, and hit play.

  1. I know you were serious about "turn out the lights, lay flat on the floor, crank the volume all the way up, and hit play" but I had to laugh thinking about the last time that I actually did that. Talk about flashbacks to very different times.

Never heard this one, and I enjoyed it. This whole project has let me see that I don't really "listen" to music the same way that I used to, and I need to get back into it again.

  2. Aw, this was a really nice post. In idea I would like to put in writing like this additionally – taking time and actual effort to make a very good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and by no means seem to get something done.
